Iman Asante Shumpert was born on the 26th of June, 1990, in Berwyn, Illinois. Shumpert and his fellow NBA player Evan Turner were teammates on the same basketball team in Oak Park, Illinois. He went on to attend Oak Park and River Forest High School. 

Shumpert helped Oak Park and River Forest to three conference titles. He was rated at the 15th spot among the nation’s senior players by Scout.com and the 28th spot by Rivals.com.

Shumpert was drafted as the 17th overall by the New York Knicks in 2011. The following year, he was selected to participate in the NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest.
