Jim Fassel was born in Anaheim, California, on August 31, 1949. He played quarterback at Fullerton College, USC, and Long Beach State. He was selected by the Chicago Bears in 1972 and played for a brief time in the NFL and the World Football League.
His long coaching career was preceded by a short career as a quarterback. Vassil, a seventh-round pick for the Chicago Bears, also spent time with the Houston Oilers and San Diego Chargers in 1972 before landing in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts.
